As a result of a low groundwater level, wooden poles or pile heads in the Netherlands can rot. Wooden poles and pile heads must not come into contact with oxygen: due to the decreasing groundwater levels in dry summer periods, this can already happen and will increasingly occur due to increasing climate extremes. If it is not possible to rise or maintain the desired groundwater level with passive or active infiltration measures, replacing the wooden posts or pile heads is the only solution. This is a costly but necessary measure to preserve valuable buildings.
