Reintroducing pavements (sidewalks)

Flooding Staphorst, The Netherlands © Weblog Staphorst

In times of flooding from a heavy rainstorm, pavements can keep the water in the streets. The pavement then remains passable and the homes and buildings stay dry.
In recent years many pavements have disappeared in cities and districts to increase wheelchair accessibility and in city centres with restricted traffic zones. A raised pavement is enough to prevent flooding in homes during moderate floods.
