Saline crops

Due to land subsidence, rising sea levels and lower river discharge during long dry periods, salinization in coastal areas increases during these dry periods. With an increasing demand for fresh water (40% more by 2050), it is also becoming more difficult to counter salinization by flushing the area with fresh water. Salinization offers opportunities for nature, recreation and the cultivation of salt-tolerant crops. Examples of salt tolerant crops are: sea kale, barley, spelt, sea beet, mustard seed, salty rocket and quinoa.
